Nebrodi Park was established in 1993. It includes the most important and largest woodland areas of Sicily (about 50,000 hectares). The best-known arboreal species are Fagus sylvatica (situated in the most southern area of diffusion), Quercus cerris, and Quercus suber.
With Alpine Guide, in a Trekking Tour you will explore:
Biviere and Maulazzo lake, Catafurco Waterfall.
- Biviere Lake is the most important high-mountain wetland in Sicily for its great naturalistic value and its particular vegetable and animal population. The very rich flora is influenced by the periodical variations of the water level, leading to a horizontal zonation of the vegetation, according to the various dominating species.
Moreover, the presence of water in a mountain area covered with beech woodlands represents a privileged reference point for the life of several aquatic bird species, as well as for the stopover of migratory birds.
A natural phenomenon which is worth a mention: during the summer, the water of the lake turns red because of the blooming of a micro algae called Euglena sanguinea. Afterwards, it enters the beautiful Mangalaviti Woodland, made of imposing high-trunk beech woodlands of great naturalistic and landscape value, with large panoramic points facing, "Rocche del Crasto", and the "Aeolian Islands".
- Maulazzo Lake, is an artificial basin in the north-eastern part of Mt. Soro where the distance from Biviere lake is about 6km. The Maulazzo, has adquired a great value as far as its naturalistic aspects and landscape are concerned.
"Catafurco waterfall", another natural beauty of Nebrodis, which falls in the hamlet of St. Basil, in the town of Galati Mamertino (Messina).
